Wooden Trough Planters

A trough planter has one job: give roots a long, deep run of soil so herbs, salads and seasonal colour can actually thrive along a wall, path or balcony edge. Most don’t. The cheap ones arrive as a flat-pack weekend project, are built from thin timber that wicks water, and rot from the base within two winters.

Ours are different. Every Trelush trough is made in our Kent workshop from solid, wide-plank timber, and it turns up fully assembled — no bags of screws, no instructions, no wobble. We finish and construct them so water drains instead of pooling in the joints, which is where a wooden planter usually starts to rot. And because there’s no plastic liner leaching into the soil, they’re genuinely safe to grow food in.

The Hastings is our black wide-plank trough, built for the spots where a standard pot looks lost — running under a window, along a fence line, or squaring off a patio. It comes in three lengths (2ft, 3ft and 4ft), all the same generous depth, so you can match it to the space rather than the other way round.

Every trough is covered by our 90-day guarantee and 2-year warranty, and delivered fully assembled across mainland UK. See also our raised bed planters and the full wooden planters range.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put soil straight into a wooden trough planter?

Yes. Our troughs are built and finished so you can fill them directly with peat-free compost — no plastic liner needed. We leave drainage so water escapes rather than sitting in the base.

Are wooden trough planters a good idea?

For a long, narrow space they’re the best option: a trough gives roots far more soil than a row of pots, holds moisture more evenly, and looks like one considered piece rather than a cluster.

Will a wooden trough planter rot?

A badly-made one will, usually from the base where water pools in the joints. Ours are constructed to drain and finished to shed water, and covered by a 2-year warranty.

What can I grow in a trough planter?

Herbs, salad leaves, strawberries, trailing flowers and compact veg all do well. The 4ft is popular for a mixed herb run; the 2ft suits a balcony or windowsill ledge.

Do they come assembled?

Yes — every Trelush trough arrives fully built. No flat-pack, no tools, no leftover screws.
