A large wooden planter solves the problem a cluster of pots never quite does: one generous, continuous run of soil that anchors a space. Enough root room for proper planting — a full herb bed, a screen of colour, a row of veg — and enough visual weight that it looks intentional rather than scattered.
The catch with big planters is that everything wrong with a cheap one gets bigger too. More thin timber to wick water. More flat-pack panels to wrestle. More weight sitting on a base that rots first. Ours are built the opposite way: made by hand in our Kent workshop from solid timber, constructed so water drains away from the joints, and delivered fully assembled — which matters most at this size, because nobody wants to build a 4-foot planter from a diagram.

How big is a 4ft wooden planter really?
Ours are 1160mm long with a 1070×195×225mm internal planting area — room for a full run of herbs, salads or seasonal colour in one continuous bed.
Are large wooden planters heavy to move?
They're solid timber, so they have real weight — part of why they feel planted rather than perched. Position first, then fill; once full of compost you won't want to move any large planter.
Do large wooden planters need a liner?
No. Ours drain properly and are finished to resist rot without a liner, so you can fill directly with peat-free compost.
Will a big wooden planter rot out at the base?
That's how cheap ones fail — more soil means more moisture sitting on the base. Ours are constructed so water sheds away from the joints, and they're covered by a 2-year warranty.
