Raised beds without the build. Open the box, start planting.

The Sussex raised bed gives herbs, salads and cut flowers a deep, well-drained root run, and it arrives as a finished planter rather than a kit.

Hand-built in our Kent workshop from solid Northern European softwood.

Free UK delivery, and every planter arrives fully assembled. Add compost and plant the same day.

Timbac edible-safe finish, 2-year full guarantee, 90-day free returns.

The full story.

A raised bed earns its keep by giving roots room: more soil, better drainage, and a working height that saves your back. The catch with wooden ones is always the same: thin, flat-pack timber that soaks up water and rots out at the base, usually just as the bed is finally full and productive.

Our Sussex raised beds are made to outlast that. Each one is built by hand in our Kent workshop from solid slatted timber, constructed so water runs off rather than sitting in the joints, and delivered fully assembled, so you place it, fill it, and plant it the same afternoon. There’s no plastic liner leaching into the soil, so whatever you grow in it is safe to eat.

The Sussex comes in two finishes, a warm natural tan and a smart black, and three lengths, so you can line a path, frame a patio or build a small kitchen garden. Same build, same generous depth; you’re choosing on looks and length, not quality.

Every bed carries our 2-year full guarantee, with 90-day free returns. See also our herb & vegetable planters and wooden trough planters.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Got questions? We've got answers. If we missed yours, just drop us a line.

What sizes do the raised beds come in?

The Sussex raised bed comes in 2ft, 3ft and 4ft lengths, in Tan or Black. The 2ft suits a balcony or a doorstep, the 3ft is the all-rounder, and the 4ft gives you a proper kitchen-garden bed.

Do I really not have to build it?

Really. Every Sussex raised bed is delivered fully assembled. There is no flat-pack, no bag of screws and no instruction sheet. Open the box, fill it with compost and plant the same afternoon.

What can I grow in a raised bed planter?

Salad leaves, herbs, strawberries, dwarf beans, chard, beetroot and cut-and-come-again veg all thrive. It also makes a generous home for bedding plants and bulbs if you would rather grow colour than food.

Is it safe for growing food?

Yes. We finish every planter with Timbac, our own non-toxic, water-and-wax-based treatment. It is not pressure-treated, so it is safe around edibles, pets, soil and children from the day it arrives.

Will the wood rot?

Cheap raised beds often do, because thin boards soak up water all winter. Timbac is formulated to slow water absorption, and our 2-year full guarantee covers manufacturing defects and anti-rot, with no exclusions.

How deep is the soil in a Sussex raised bed?

Deep enough for the crops most people actually grow: leaves, herbs, roots like beetroot and shallow carrots, and strawberries. The exact internal dimensions are listed on each product page.

Where should I put a raised bed?

Somewhere with at least six hours of sun for veg, less for leafy herbs and salads. Because the Sussex is a self-contained planter, it can sit on a patio, gravel, decking or grass.

How quickly will it arrive?

Order before 12 noon and we dispatch the same day from our Kent workshop, with delivery in 2 to 3 working days. UK delivery is free.

Can I return it if it is not right?

Yes. You have 90-day free returns on everything we make, large items included, plus the 2-year full guarantee on the planter itself.
