Most wooden planters are bought once and regretted twice: first when they turn up as a flat-pack pile of slats and a bag of screws, then again two winters later when the base has gone soft and the whole thing tips into the border. We started Trelush because we thought a wooden planter should simply last, and arrive ready to plant.

Every planter we make is built by hand in our Kent workshop from solid timber, constructed so water drains away from the joints instead of pooling and rotting them, and finished so it can stand out in a British winter. There’s no plastic liner leaching into the soil, so they’re genuinely safe to grow herbs, salad and veg in. And planters turn up fully assembled: no tools, no instructions, no weekend lost to a screwdriver.

Are wooden planters a good idea?

Yes. A good wooden planter gives roots far more soil than a plastic pot, and timber insulates that soil against heat and frost in a way plastic doesn't. It also looks warmer in a garden and ages rather than fades. The only real weakness of wood is rot, which is exactly what ours are built to resist.
Which wooden planter should I choose?

Pick by shape and space. A trough suits a long, narrow run under a window or along a fence. A raised bed gives you depth for herbs, salads and cut-and-come-again veg. Every planter in the range is food-safe, and all come in 2ft, 3ft and 4ft.
Do wooden planters rot?

Cheap ones do, and they nearly always go at the base first, where water sits. Ours are constructed so water drains away from the joints instead of pooling in them, and treated with our own Timbac formula rather than left bare. We back that with a 2-year full guarantee covering rot and manufacturing defects, with no exclusions.
Do your planters arrive assembled?

Our troughs and raised beds are delivered fully built, with no flat-pack and no tools. The Square Sussex planter is the one exception: it arrives as five flat-packed pieces with pre-drilled holes and takes about ten minutes with a screwdriver.
Are they safe to grow vegetables and herbs in?

Yes. We treat with our own Timbac formula, which is animal-safe and edible-safe with no chemical leach into the soil, and we don't use tanalised timber. That's a deliberate design choice, not an afterthought. Tomatoes, herbs, leafy greens and root veg are all fine.
What size wooden planter do I need?

Every planter comes in 2ft, 3ft and 4ft, so measure the run you want to fill before you choose. A 2ft suits a balcony, a doorstep or a small patio corner. A 4ft is 1160mm long and gives you one continuous bed, enough for a full row of salad, herbs or seasonal colour.
What wood do you use, and how thick are the boards?

Solid Northern European softwood: slow-grown, dense, and chosen for outdoor durability. The boards are thick and weighty rather than the thin panels used on flat-pack alternatives, which is why our planters hold their shape once filled. You'll notice the difference the moment you lift one.
How quickly will my planter arrive?

Order before 12 noon and we dispatch the same day from our Kent workshop. UK mainland delivery typically takes 2–3 working days from dispatch, so a Monday-morning order generally arrives by Wednesday or Thursday. It turns up assembled, so there's nothing to build when it does.
Can I return a planter if I change my mind?

Yes. 90-day free returns on everything, including the 4ft sizes. There's no return postage to pay. Just contact us within 90 days and we'll arrange collection.
