If you’re growing something you’ll actually eat, what the planter is made of matters. A lot of cheap wooden planters are lined with plastic or treated with preservatives that can leach into the soil — fine for bedding flowers, not what you want around your basil and tomatoes.

Ours are built to be safe to grow food in. Every Trelush planter is made by hand in our Kent workshop from solid timber, with no plastic liner and no leaching, so herbs, salads and veg get clean soil and a proper root run. They drain rather than waterlog, they don’t rot out at the base like flat-pack ones, and they turn up fully assembled — so you can fill and sow the same day.

For a herb & salad bed with depth, the Sussex raised bed comes in tan or black. For a long, low run along a wall or fence, the Hastings trough is the one. All come in 2ft, 3ft and 4ft.

Are wooden planters safe to grow vegetables in?

Ours are. There’s no plastic liner and no leaching treatment, so the soil — and anything you grow to eat — stays clean. That’s a deliberate design choice, not an afterthought.

Do you need to line a wooden planter to grow veg?

No. Ours drain properly and are finished to resist rot without a liner. A breathable liner is optional for very thirsty crops, but never a plastic one against food.

How deep does a planter need to be for herbs and veg?

The 225mm internal depth suits herbs, salad leaves, strawberries, chillies and most compact veg. Deep-rooting crops like carrots or parsnips prefer more.

What grows well in these?

Basil, mint, parsley and other herbs; lettuce and salad leaves; strawberries; chillies and bush tomatoes; trailing crops over the trough edge.

Do they arrive ready to plant?

Yes — fully assembled. Fill with peat-free compost and sow the same day.
