Each Black Sussex is built by a small family team in Kent. We cut the slats, fit the plastic liner, secure the slatted base, finish each one in deep black, and ship the whole thing fully assembled by courier. The build never leaves the workshop until it's ready to plant.

A slatted black trough at 21cm front-to-back and 24cm tall — narrow enough for balcony rails, awkward path edges, and the strip behind a back fence. I bought 3 x 3ft planters to edge the patio off. Perfect sizing Info. Arrived fully assembled.
They look good and feel solid. Im really happy with them.
Not sure if they've been treated or not, so may need to do that to stop them rotting. Gap at the bottom for water flow.

I don't do reviews, however these planters seem pretty sturdy and worth the money. Closest I could get was from b&q which were £3 more. Not put anything in them yet but looks like they will last. They don't have many reviews but I'd buy them again.

Arrived within a few days of ordering, fabulous quality, I ordered the tan one because they were out of stock of black but I painted it a dark grey and it looks fab, the ferns are in and have hellebores to add, brightens up a dark corner

Yes — every size in the Sussex slatted range arrives fully built, including the 4ft length. Open the box, add soil, plant. No flat-pack, no tools, no instruction manual to lose. We hand-assemble each one in our Kent workshop and ship it ready to use.

With normal care, comfortably beyond the 2-year full guarantee. Slow-grown Northern European softwood is dense enough to handle wet winters; the Timbac treatment protects the timber from rot; the plastic liner inside keeps wet soil off the wood. A light re-treat with garden oil every couple of years keeps it in shape for years.

Yes. We treat every Sussex with our own Timbac — non-toxic, never tanalised, no harsh chemicals to leach into the soil. Edibles, herbs, salads and fruit are all safe to plant from the day it arrives.

Anything shallow-rooted: herbs, salads, strawberries, summer flowers, small bulbs, alpines, low-growing perennials. Internal soil depth is around 21cm — not enough for deep-rooted veg like potatoes, carrots, parsnips or leeks. For those, choose a deeper raised wooden planter.

Order before 12 noon on a working day and we dispatch the same day from our Kent workshop. UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days from there. Free over £99.

The Sussex finish is treated through the timber, not surface-painted, so chipping isn't a problem. Some lightening is possible after years of intense summer UV; a refresh coat of dark wood stain restores it. The Timbac treatment underneath protects against rot regardless of how the finish wears.

Yes. A plastic liner is fitted along the long sides before the planter leaves Kent. It keeps soil contained between the slats and protects the timber from wet soil. The slatted base underneath drains water through naturally.

Yes — we sell a matching set of legs as a separate accessory. Out of the box the planter sits flat with the slatted base raised slightly, so drainage is fine. Legs are useful if you want to lift the planter for stronger visual presence or set it on a surface where you'd prefer no direct contact.
