About this planter
🔨 Hand-built in our Kent workshop, shipped flat-packed

Each Square Sussex is built by a small family team in Kent. We cut the slats, fit the panels, drill the drainage, and pack five pieces flat for easy courier delivery. The build is yours to assemble — no specialist tools, no carpentry skills, just a screwdriver and around ten minutes.

🌱 Plant edibles from day one

The timber is treated with our own Timbac formula — non-toxic, never tanalised, no harsh chemicals to leach into the soil. Tomatoes, herbs, salads, fruit, even a young dwarf apple tree — all safe to plant the moment you've assembled it. Backed by a 2-year full guarantee on rot and manufacturing.

🪴 Deep, square, room for serious roots

A 50cm-wide square planter at over 40cm internal depth — enough volume for a young dwarf fruit tree, a cluster of root vegetables, or a permanent shrub. Pre-drilled drainage holes in the base let water through naturally. Best for medium-to-deep-rooted plants — potatoes, carrots, dwarf trees, mature shrubs, large herbs, and feature plantings.

Planter Features

EASY 5-PIECE ASSEMBLY Five flat-packed parts and pre-drilled pilot holes — a screwdriver and ten minutes is all it takes. No carpentry skill, no sawing, no decoding flat-pack instructions.

DEEP ENOUGH FOR DWARF TREES Over 40cm of internal soil depth — enough for a young dwarf apple, a permanent shrub, or a serious root-vegetable harvest. Other planters in our range can't match it.

SAFE FOR EDIBLES, PETS, AND CHILDREN Treated with our own non-toxic Timbac formula, never tanalised, so you can plant herbs, salads and tomatoes from day one without worrying about the soil.

PRE-DRILLED DRAINAGE The base ships with drainage holes already drilled — no DIY drill-out, no waterlogged roots, just lift, plant, water.

STURDY NORTHERN-EUROPEAN SOFTWOOD Slow-grown timber with the density to hold its shape — a substantial cube that takes British weather without warping or splitting at the joints.

A FEATURE FOR CORNERS AND ENDPOINTS Square form anchors a corner, marks a path's endpoint, or stands alongside a doorway — places a long trough physically can't fill.

HAND-BUILT IN OUR KENT WORKSHOP Cut, packed, and shipped by a small family team in Kent — a real workshop, not a factory line, not a container port.

2-YEAR FULL GUARANTEE Rot, manufacturing, structural — every cause covered with no exclusions. If something goes wrong, we put it right from the workshop where it was built.

90 DAYS, NO STRESS Three months to live with the planter and decide. Free returns on every size we sell — we arrange collection, you don't lift a finger.

A KENT NUMBER, NOT A CALL CENTRE Ring our line and someone who built it picks up — no ticket queue, no call-centre script, no music on hold.

Solid through, not flat-pack fiction

Slow-grown Northern European softwood, thick-cut and assembled by hand. Not chipboard with a grain print, not a pressed-panel kit pretending to be timber.

Safe because we treat it ourselves

Timbac is our own non-toxic timber treatment - not tanalised, no harsh chemicals. Plant edibles from day one, with no chemical wait.

Delivered assembled, ready to plant

Almost every planter in our range arrives fully built. Open the box, add soil, plant. No flat-pack instructions, no lost bolts, no Sunday afternoon gone.

If it fails, we fix it - for 2 years

Rot, build, manufacturing — all covered. No exclusions, no small print. We made it. We stand behind it.

A real British business

Frequently Asked Questions.

Got questions? We've got answers — and if we missed yours, just drop us a line.

How does the Square Sussex arrive — assembled or flat-packed?

Flat-packed in five pieces — four sides and a base, packed flat for easy courier delivery. Assembly takes around ten minutes with a screwdriver; pilot holes are pre-drilled, so there's no carpentry, no sawing, and no decoding instructions. A step-by-step assembly guide is in the box.

What tools do I need to put it together?

A standard screwdriver. The screws are supplied; the pilot holes are pre-drilled. No drill, no saw, no specialist kit. Most customers have it built in under fifteen minutes.

Is the timber treatment safe for vegetables and herbs?

Yes. We treat every Sussex with our own Timbac — non-toxic, never tanalised, no harsh chemicals to leach into the soil. Edibles, herbs, salads and fruit are all safe to plant from the moment it's assembled.

How deep is it — what can I plant in it?

Internal planting depth is around 40cm, which is significantly deeper than our slatted trough range. That's enough for medium-to-deep-rooted plants: potatoes, carrots, parsnips, larger herbs, mature shrubs, and dwarf fruit trees. Soil capacity is roughly 80–100L.

How long does delivery take?

Order before 12 noon on a working day and we dispatch the same day from our Kent workshop. UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days from there. Free over £99.

Won't a flat-packed wooden planter be flimsy?

Not when it's built thick. The Square Sussex is solid Northern European softwood — the same timber we use across our slatted range — slow-grown for density and assembled with reinforced corner joints. Once it's together, it's a rigid cube that takes British weather without warping.

Will it rot?

Not quickly. The timber is treated with Timbac before it leaves the workshop — a non-toxic preservative that protects against rot and decay. The pre-drilled drainage holes prevent waterlogging at the base. The 2-year guarantee covers rot regardless.

Does it have a built-in liner?

No — the Square Sussex is solid-panelled with pre-drilled drainage in the base, so a liner isn't needed for soil containment. If you want to extend the timber's lifespan further, a layer of weed membrane against the inside walls works well; many of our customers add one.

What's the returns policy?

90-day free returns on every product we sell, including the Square Sussex. If the planter doesn't suit your space, get in touch and we'll arrange courier collection — no charge, full refund once it's back with us.

Can I add legs or feet to lift it higher?

Yes — we sell a matching set of legs as a separate accessory. Out of the box the planter sits flat on the ground, with pre-drilled drainage so puddling isn't a concern. Legs are useful if you want stronger visual presence, want to set it on a surface where you'd prefer no direct contact, or want better airflow underneath in a damp spot.
